2016 Festival of Architecture and Cairns Open House

2016 Festival of Architecture and Cairns Open House  |  5-9 Oct

The 2016 program is supported by local businesses and sponsors and includes three exciting events.

On Wednesday 5th October, End Credits Film Club and the Australian Institute of Architects, with assistance from Cairns Regional Council, have collaborated to bring the screening of the cutting edge film “Design Disruptors” to Cairns. Design Disruptors goes behind the scenes of the world's leading technology and design companies to learn how they make world-changing products and how design thinking is changing the world. It will be shown at Wharf One Café at 7:30pm. www.petitcinebar.com.au/screenings

On Thursday 6th October there will be a free evening lecture on the history of Cairns urban design and architecture by Dr Shaneen Fantin at The Cairns Institute at James Cook University. Lost Cairns is the theme of the talk and explores great local architecture from around the region including the work of Edwin Oribin, Syd Barnes and Ted Orchard.

The festival will also host its very popular free public walk on Sunday 9th October through parts of the CBD. This year’s theme is “Cairns Public Places – The Design Stories”. The walk includes new sites around the CBD, and will be followed by a bus tour of local award winning buildings including The Artillery Museum and The Tobruk Pool. The Design Story behind each building will be explained by the lead architect on each project. There is a group lunch for a small fee which includes food and one drink. This will take place between the walking tour and the bus tour.

The Festival of Architecture has been supported in 2016 by Department of Environment and Heritage, Cairns Regional Council, Gilboy Hydraulic Solutions, WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff, LA3 and Planz Town Planning.

Places for the walking tour, lunch and bus tour are limited to 40 people and bookings can be made by emailing email/cairnsopenhouse)(gmail.com. When emailing please confirm which events you will be attending and how many people will be in your party.
